Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac Banned from Middle Earth.
Hot on the heels of such achievements as giving women the vote (28 November 1893), scaling Everest’s uppermost peak (29 May 1953) and legalizing same-sex marriage (19 August 2013) New Zealand’s Office of Film and Literature Classification recently rewarded the country’s tendency toward enlightenment by truncating its right to informed choice.
The OFLC has deemed Franck Khalfoun’s remake Maniac (Elijah Wood) 'injurious to the public good' and have banned its release in all formats, though it appears patrons of the upcoming New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) are somehow not as likely to suddenly snap, stalk and maim the innocent.

ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE (US Release Dates): Finally Amber will be Heard.
I live in New Zealand and that can have many advantages: you can fill in your lazy Saturday afternoons by tying enormous elastic bands to your ankles and diving off of ridiculously high ledges, it’s also the place that welcomed in the would-be 2013 apocalypse before anyone else in the world even had chance to pull on their gas mask and load up their trusty crossbow and, of course, there’s Hobbit shooting (when in season).
The other lessor known advantage is that on June 11th, 2009 we Kiwi’s got to witness (via DVD) Amber Heard’s very much delayed horny, alcohol/drug guzzling teen slasher opera ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE.
Originally completed in 2006 the film was to immediately fall into the sticky tar pit that is big-studio politics; owners The Weinstein Company reshuffling and rescheduling until the hapless film was eventually sold to soon to be defunct Senator Entertainment US. What followed was a lengthy stint gathering dust until the wheels again turned and now, barring any unfortunate last minute twist, The Weinstein Company has again acquired distribution rights and is set to finally unleash Mandy Lane on the US via VOD (Sept. 6th) and theatrical release the following October 11th.
So was it worth the wait…

“A group of high-schoolers invite Mandy Lane, “a good girl” who becomes the object of everyone’s affection after returning from summer break, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to mysteriously drop one at a time”.

… just do yourself a favor and don’t read up on any more about this film, any twisty secrets it may have once held are now well and truly floating around, face-down, in the public domain.

Snowpiercer: Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) Juggernaut Bolt of Sci-fi Extreme.

Those who have not yet experienced Bong Joon-ho’s previous films (Memories of Murder (2003) and The Host (2006) are of special note) will perhaps not be prepared for his jarringly crisp and wonderfully visceral production style.

The trailer for his latest offering ‘Snowpiercer’, a bolt of sci-fi extreme torn from the French graphic novel ‘Le Transperceneige’ (Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette), here continues this visionary Korean directors assault on all that is rotten and worn within mainstream cinema.

This time, mostly, crossing over into English language the film boasts an outstanding raft of acting talent: Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, John Hurt, the riveting Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris. Release date: 3013 TBA.

Official synopsis:

Based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” SNOWPIERCER is set in the year 2031 where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.
